Qualcomm proves something most thought was already given…

… and that is that next generation CDMA radio technology can deliver synchronous (or nearly synchronous) bandwidth to a mobile user.

In a test of EVDO rev A Qualcomm proved that it can do what people expected. Today, EVDO is an asynchronous service. It offers narrowband uplinks and broadband downlinks. That geometry is ideal for web browsing and email, but it’s quite useless when it comes to voice, particularly if the narrowband uplink is less than about 70 kbps. It is Qualcomm’s hope that operators will eventually come around to the inevitable – that people, meaning subscribers, will use the bandwidth the operator delivers the way we want to.

That use of bandwidth will most likely include VoIP services from non-operators.
